OKC’s Chesapeake Energy Arena may be in line for upgrades

As Oklahoma City’s Metropolitan Area Projects program (MAPS) plans it’s next set of improvements for the city with the MAPS 4 project, it appears the Thunder and the franchise’s fans could be direct beneficiaries of what is to come.

According to William Crum of The Oklahoman, the Thunder’s home court, Chesapeake Energy Arena, could receive $120 to $135 million in improvements. The upgrades could include the following:

  • 70,000 square feet expansion by widening the concourses
  • Makeover for the locker rooms
  • New scoreboard
  • Larger, better quality video screens
  • New seats and elevators would be replaced

Along with making this better for the Thunder and their fans, this would also provide Chesapeake Energy Arena concert-goers with an even better experience. According to Crum, the arena generates “$90 million in direct spending annually in the local economy.”

The city council has to hold another meeting regarding the entire MAPS 4. Crum reports those talks will finish up on Tuesday, August 6.
