OKC names Grant Gibbs as new Blue head coach

After serving as head coach of the Oklahoma City Blue in the G League for five seasons, Mark Daigneault was finally called up to the big time this offseason to serve as an assistant coach to Billy Donovan for the Thunder. Much like Oklahoma City did with most of its assistant coach hirings at the NBA level, the organization looked in-house for Daigneault’s replacement as the Blue’s head coach.

In a press release, the franchise announced Grant Gibbs would be the one to take over duties after serving as an assistant to Daigneault over the last two years. Gibbs spoke about the next step in his coaching career in the release:

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to take on this role with the Blue and continue to be part of the Thunder organization. Getting to work with our players and help them improve on a daily basis is something that I’m very committed to, and I’m looking forward to building on what has been established here.

As a player, Gibbs played in 24 games for Gonzaga in 2009-10 before transferring to Creighton, where he spent three years. He then played overseas in the Netherlands and Germany before saddling up with the Blue as a coach.
