Oisin Murphy rides 1,000th career winner on Perfect Sign at Southwell racecourse

Oisin Murphy rode his 1,000th career winner in Britain when Perfect Sign (4-1) struck at Southwell.

Sporting the silks of his main employer Qatar Racing, the Irishman sent the filly two-and-three-quarter lengths clear of her rivals in the 6f Play Ladbrokes 5-A-Side On Football Fillies' Novice Median Auction Stakes.

Murphy, 25, is on course for his second jockeys' championship, despite a strong challenge from William Buick.

A former champion apprentice rider, he is ten wins ahead with less than three weeks of the season to go.

Murphy joins the likes of Frankie Dettori, Ryan Moore and Silvestre de Sousa, who have each surpassed the 1,000 winner mark.

“I’ve been blessed to ride for some fantastic people since the start of my career and it is great to have ridden 1,000 British winners at the age of the 25," he told Great British Racing.

"There has been some amazing highlights among them and hopefully I can continue riding winners.”

Murphy has 11 British Group 1 victories to his name, with three achieved on Roaring Lion in 2018.

He celebrated his first Classic success earlier this year when Kameko took the Qipco 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket in record time.

The colt's trainer Andrew Balding has provided Murphy with 225 winners during his time in the saddle, more than anyone else in the profession.
