Oisin Murphy looking to pick up ride in Cheltenham Festival race

Leading flat jockey Oisin Murphy is hoping to pick up a ride in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival next week.

The Kerry native recently returned to action after a serving a ban and has been among the winners since, with a 40/1 double at Wolverhampton on Monday followed up with victory on board Burdett Road (13/8f) at Lingfield on Tuesday.

But the three-time champion jockey is aiming to secure a ride in the final race on day two of Cheltenham after taking out a jumps licence this year.

He told Sky Sports Racing: "My uncle (Jim Culloty) won it about 20 years ago on Total Enjoyment and it would be lovely to get the chance to ride in it one day."

Murphy's best chance of securing a ride in the race could be Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins, who looks set to run a number of horses in the race.

The Carlow handler is responsible for 14 of the 44 entries for the two-mile contest, which include the likes of It's For Me, Fun Fun Fun, Chapeau De Soleil, Fact To File and Western Diego.
