Oisin Murphy has been crowned Champion Flat Jockey for the first time, on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot.

The Irishman came into the weekend, which marks the conclusion of the British flat racing season, already assured of taking the title having ridden 168 winners from 854 rides, a strike rate of around 20%. Daniel Tudhope, who led the way at one stage earlier in the season, finished second on 133 wins, with Jim Crowley third on 98.

The 24-year-old, who was Champion Apprentice in 2014, is the youngest winner of the title since Ryan Moore won the first of his three champion jockey crowns in 2006.

Perhaps his most notable win of the season came in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, where he rode Japanese raider Deirdre to victory, while he also partnered Veracious to success in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.

Cieren Fallon Jr., son of the legendary six-time champion jockey, has been named Champion Apprentice.
