ST. LOUIS _ The Blues lost a goal to an early whistle, couldn't stretch out a 2-1 lead through the final minute of regulation, survived an Edmonton power play in overtime and went to their first shootout of the season before losing, 3-2, to the Oilers at Enterprise Center on Wednesday.
The Blues got a goal from Tyler Bozak on their first shootout attempt, but Vladimir Tarasenko and Brayden Schenn were stopped while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor McDavid scored for Edmonton for a 2-1 win in the shootout.
Ivan Barbashev and Schenn scored for the Blues and Jake Allen stopped 34 of 36 shots he faced, including some sharp saves as Edmonton threatened in the third period. The Blues killed four Edmonton power plays in regulation and one in overtime.
Schenn was called for tripping 1:34 into overtime to give Edmonton a 4-on-3 and the Blues got through it.
Edmonton tied the game with 55.2 seconds to play after pulling their goalie for an extra attacker. Oscar Klefbom fired a shot in from the blueline that found its way through traffic for a goal.
The Blues jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Barbashev, who was alone in front of the net to take a pass from Oskar Sundqvist and score with 13:58 to go in the first. Jordan Nolan, in his first game with the Blues, had the other assist on the goal.
The lead went to 2-0 with 6:28 when Chris Butler, another player just called up from San Antonio, shot wide of the net but Schenn got the rebound and, from a very tough angle, put the puck past Cam Talbot to make it 2-0.
The Blues came out sluggish in the second period and Edmonton quickly got a goal, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins getting position in front of Robert Thomas and putting the puck in the net.
Allen kept the lead at one goal with some good saves and the Blues eventually started playing Edmonton more even. It looked like the Blues had added a goal with 13:05 when Zach Sanford put the puck in the net but the goal was waved off for goalie interference when Tarasenko collided with Talbot, though replays showed that Tarasenko was shoved into Talbot by Edmonton's Matt Benning. But the Blues were not allowed to challenge the play because the referee had blown the whistle on the play before the goal went in, negating everything.
