Oil workers left without fresh water as bug found in 'contamination probe'

A bug has left more than 100 oil platform staff without fresh water.

BP – operator of the Clair Ridge field, 50 miles west of Shetland – is investigating the source of the enterococcus faecalis contamination.

The bug can cause fever, sickness and diarrhoea.

A source claimed Clair’s offshore installation manager told them there would be no showers until at least today.

One worker said: “There is general disgust that personnel cannot wash after a day’s work.

“The feeling is that personnel should be down-manned due to inadequate living conditions.”

No one has fallen ill but it can take 24 hours for symptoms to show.

Water was also shut off to all personnel cabins with only eight toilets on board for 125 workers.

Disposable plates and cutlery are being used.

Yesterday, BP confirmed an investigation into “possible contamination”.

A spokesman said: “As a precaution, and while we carry out further tests, bottled water is being used for food preparation, drinking, handwashing and teeth brushing.

“Shower, toilet and laundry facilities are all available. The suspected contamination came from a single sample.

“Several other samples taken elsewhere on the platform have shown no signs of contamination.

“We are carrying out further testing of the supply.”
