Ohtani honored for wild week

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rookie Shohei Ohtani's sensational start to his major league career as a two-way player with the Los Angeles Angels earned him the American League Player of the Week Award, Major League Baseball announced Monday.

Ohtani excelled both on the mound and at the plate for the week of April 2-8. The 23-year-old batted .462 with three home runs and seven RBIs, while picking up his second win as a pitcher on Sunday by allowing one hit over seven scoreless innings.

According to MLB, Ohtani is the first two-way player to win a weekly MVP award since the honor was inaugurated in 1975.

"I'm honored to have been chosen as MLB's AL Player of the Week," Ohtani said in a statement released by the Angels. "Thank you to the Angels staff and my teammates for helping me achieve this award."

Ohtani is currently in Arlington, where the Angels have started a series against the Texas Rangers. As he had pitched the previous day, he did not appear in Monday's game.
