ARLINGTON, Texas -- Two-way star Shohei Ohtani of Los Angeles Angels became the first major league player since Babe Ruth in 1921 to take the mound as the starting pitcher while also leading the league in home runs, according to the team.
The right-hander hit in the No. 2 hole while taking his turn in the rotation, facing the host Texas Rangers. Ohtani had moved into a tie for the league lead in homers the previous day when he belted a solo shot for his seventh longball.
On the mound, the 26-year-old gave up four runs, including a three-run blast in the first inning, but smacked a two-run double in the second inning.
He left the mound after five innings, and the Angels went on to win 9-4, giving Ohtani his first victory as a pitcher since 2018.
