Ohio University trolls Ohio State on attempt to trademark “The”

You’ve probably heard by now, but the Ohio State branding folks were drinking a cup of extreme optimism and boldness lately. It has reportedly submitted an application to the US Patent and Trademark Office to copyright the word “The” so that it can use it in clothing apparel.

Good luck on that one.

Ohio State has been catching flack on it across multiple publications and websites this morning, and for good reason.

And while it’s not exactly a donnybrook of a rivalry, don’t think for one minute that Ohio University was going to let this comical star alignment slide from it’s so-called bigger brother.

No, oh no. Instead OU publishes a Tweet this morning poking fun at THE Ohio State University by pointing out that it was THE first university in the great state of Ohio.

Subtle, yet effective. Well done there in Athens. We tip our hat.
