Ohio State tight end Luke Farrell on the preseason Mackey Award watch list

The annual college football awards watch list cycle is in full swing. We’ve already heard from several awards that have Buckeyes included on them earlier this week, and now we continue with the John Mackey Award.

The Mackey Award is handed out annually to the college football tight end judged to be the best at his position, and Ohio State’s Luke Farrell is on the preseason watch list. Farrell, a 6-6, 250 lb. rising junior, led all OSU tight ends last year with 20 receptions for 205 yards and one touchdown. He is also a three-time OSU Scholar Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree.

The Mackey Award was established in 2000 and the Buckeyes have not yet enjoyed a winner in its 18-year history.

It’ll be interesting to see how the tight-end depth chart pans out this fall. While Farrell got most of the touches last year, senior Rashod Berry should also be in the mix for a starting position, while sophomore Jeremy Ruckert has been pushing for more extensive playing time according to head coach Ryan Day.

The winner of the Mackey Award will be announced on December 11, and presented at the Home Depot College Awards show the following day on December 12.
