Ohio State Softball drops close one to Grand Canyon

The Ohio State softball team dropped a nail-biter 8-7 to Grand Canyon today despite pounding out twelve hits.

The Buckeyes struck first with two run-scoring doubles in the top of the third inning. Emily Clark doubled home Lilli Piper to break the ice, followed by a  Kallie Boren shot to left center to put OSU up 2-0.

Ohio State added to the lead in the fourth with five hits and four runs to make it 6-0 before Grand Canyon finally got things going with five runs in the bottom of the inning to answer and close to within 6-5.

Brianna Betschel then singled home a run in the top of the fifth for a two-run cushion for the softball Bucks, but it wouldn’t be enough. The Lopes got three more in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good on a passed ball and a two-out, two-run scoring single.

From there, Ohio State couldn’t scratch any more runs across and the score ended 8-7. With the loss, the Buckeyes dropped to 15-8 overall on the season and will be in action again Sunday at 1:00 PM with a rematch against Grand Canyon in Phoenix.

OSU opens up the home part of their schedule next weekend.
