Ohio state senator caught driving during Zoom meeting while using home office virtual background

Andrew Brenner could be seen wearing a seatbelt and looking side to side during the meeting.

A politician in the United States has been called out for attending a Zoom meeting while driving — and using a background that made him appear to be in a home office.

Ohio state senator Andrew Brenner's seatbelt could clearly be seen in the video meeting, which was live-streamed by the state's public broadcaster on Monday (local time).

The incident happened on the same day a bill cracking down on distracted driving was introduced to the Ohio legislature.

Mr Brenner appeared to join the government meeting while in his parked car.

He then pointed the camera at the roof of the vehicle and turned on a virtual background that looked like a home office before putting the phone back in place.

The Republican senator later appeared to be driving with his seatbelt on, at one point looking left and right.

The road could be seen through the car's window, as the virtual background's edges flickered around him.

Mr Brenner told The Columbus Dispatch newspaper that he was not paying attention to the video while driving.

"I wasn't distracted. I was paying attention to the driving and listening to it (the meeting,)" Mr Brenner told the newspaper.

"I had two meetings that were back to back that were in separate locations.

"And I've actually been on other calls, numerous calls, while driving. Phone calls for the most part, but on video calls, I'm not paying attention to the video.

"To me, it's like a phone call."
