The Buckeye baseball team had a week worth remembering, and so did pitcher Griffan Smith. The Buckeyes took a game against Xavier on Tuesday, then needed a win in the rubber game against Maryland Sunday to win the series against the Terrapins.
Along game pitcher Griffan Smith to make sure that was never in doubt. Smith went the entire game, giving up just four hits and one run, all while striking out ten batters to propel the Buckeyes to a 5-1 victory.
For his efforts, Smith got a cherry on top by being recognized as the Big Ten’s Pitcher of the Week.
It’s the first career weekly Big Ten honor for the sophomore Smith, and it is well deserved. The Buckeyes return to the diamond this weekend when they host Iowa in a three-game weekend conference clash.
It wasn’t the only weekly honor for a player wearing scarlet and gray. Shortstop Zach Dezenzo was also named the Big Ten Baseball Freshman of the Week.
