Ohio State’s Dobbins, Fields make 2019 Maxwell preseason watch list

Oh goodie. It’s that time of year when all the preseason watch lists come out, and we have news on one of the biggest ones. The Maxwell Award, given out to the best college football player or the year, released its watch list today and there’s a couple of Buckeyes on it.

Running back J.K. Dobbins as well as quarterback Justin Fields are both among the eighty players appearing on the list for 2019.

Fields is beginning his career in Columbus after spending his freshman season backing up quarterback Jack Fromm in Georgia. Historically speaking, he’s one of highest graded quarterback prospects ever to come out of high school and barring any sort of huge surprise, he’ll take the reigns of the Ohio State offense under Ryan Day in 2019. He should rack up plenty of numbers in an offense that will take advantage of his dual capabilities.

After spending two seasons splitting time with Mike Weber, Dobbins will be the clear No. 1 back this fall. He had a breakout freshman year while filling in for an injured Weber, but got lost in sharing carries last year. If Ohio State has anywhere near the offensive production everyone expects, he should be a shoe-in to eclipse over 1,200 yards on the ground — maybe more.

As always, these lists will — and can — change throughout the season. For now though, the two potential Buckeye offensive stars are on the radar.
