Another day this week means another Ohio State player landing on a preseason watch list. The Doak Walker Award is handed out annually to the player judged to be the best running back in college football, and J.K. Dobbins is among the 73 names included.
The Ohio State junior will be the unquestioned No. 1 back this fall with the departure of Mike Weber to the NFL, and should have an opportunity to put up some big numbers. And with the dual-threat abilities of new starting quarterback Justin Fields to go along with a deep and talented wide-receiving corps, defenses shouldn’t be able to key solely on the tailback in the running game.
Dobbins burst onto the scene his freshman season filling in for an injured Weber and never looked back, setting a freshman rushing record of 1,403 yards on a 7.2 yard per carry average. Things took a step back last year because of more time split with Weber — and the fact that the Buckeyes had a fairly good quarterback that could sling it around.
However, this year figures to be closer to the freshman campaign than what we saw last season.
