Ohio State ranked No. 5 in initial AP Top 25 college football poll

The College Football Playoff Poll is what really matters these days, but the preseason Associated Press Top 25 Poll is out and Ohio State is ranked as the No. 5 team in the initial rankings. Since most preseason publications started to roll out way-too-early rankings that had the Buckeyes well down the list and even outside of the top ten, things recently have self-corrected in a way.

OSU was also ranked No. 5 in the initial Amway Coaches Poll. The university provided a little more color on the history of Ohio State in the poll per a release.

The Buckeyes will start the 2019 season No. 5 in the Associated Press Poll, the organization announced today. This is the sixth time in the past seven years the Buckeyes have opened the season ranked among the Top 5 teams in the country, after rankings of Nos. 2, 5, 1, 6, 2 and 5 between 2013-2018, respectively. Additionally, 2019 is the 84th season for the Associated Press to produce its college football poll. Ohio State leads the nation in total number of times ranked with this preseason ranking the 902nd ranking for Ohio State through the years out of the 1,153 polls.

Ohio State joins seven total Big Ten teams in the AP Top 25 — the most of any conference. Along with the Buckeyes, Michigan (7), Penn State (15), Michigan State (18), Wisconsin (19), Iowa (20), and Nebraska (24), all appear.

The top ten teams in addition to Ohio State and Michigan are Clemson at No. 1, followed by Alabama (2), Georgia (3), Oklahoma (4), LSU (6), Florida (8), Notre Dame (9), and Texas (10).
