Ohio State ranked No. 1 in Detroit Free Press’ Big Ten Power Rankings after week one

The Ohio State Buckeyes didn’t have an overly impressive Week one, but the Michigan-based Detroit Free Press still has them atop the Big Ten, beating out the University of Michigan.

However, it had to of been a tough decision given Ohio State’s post-first quarter struggles. After initially showcasing an elite and powerful offense in the first seven minutes, the Buckeyes were nearly outscored after that.

The Buckeyes were up 21-0 on Florida Atlantic just seven minutes in but won the game by just 24. Standout transfer quarterback Justin Fields, who totaled five touchdowns, will get his first real challenge this coming week.

That said, here’s what the Detroit Free Press’ Kirkland Crawford said about the Ohio State Buckeyes.

“Many were interested to see just how Justin Fields would do as the new starting quarterback. He answered all looming questions — again, as best as you could in Week 1 — with 234 yards passing and four touchdowns to go with 61 rushing yards and another TD. Ryan Day is now 2-0 in season-opening games in Columbus after the 45-21 win over Florida Atlantic.”

Keeping Ohio State at the top of the Big Ten is the safe move, but following the first quarter of their home opener, they certainly didn’t look like the conference’s best team.

It’ll have to be much, much better against Luke Fickell’s Cincinnati Bearcats this coming Saturday.
