We’ve got our first Ohio State baseball player off the board in the 2021 MLB draft. Starting pitcher Seth Lonsway was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the sixth round as the No. 176 pick overall.
Though Lonsway had an inconsistent 2021 campaign, he has a reputation for being able to miss bats, a trait that many teams look for despite an up and down performance. In 2020, he led all NCAA Division I baseball in strikeouts per nine innings (21.0), but was not selected by a team in last year’s draft COVID-19 shortened, five-round draft. He followed that up by leading Ohio State with 98 strikeouts this past season.
“Seth Lonsway has an elite curveball, one of the better breaking balls in the draft,” OSU coach Greg Beals said in a statement. “Scouts are aware of Seth’s ability with that breaking ball which should allow him to pitch in the big leagues. He has major league stuff. He works tirelessly on his craft and the quicker his fastball evolves and he commands his fastball, you’ll see Seth Lonsway in the big leagues. I have no doubt about that.”

For his career at OSU, Lonsway posted a 12-11 record and sported a 3.89 ERA. He’ll now get to live out his dream of making it to the next level and we say congrats.
