Ohio State now No. 2 in ESPN College Football Power Rankings

Ohio State was off this week, so it was unable to make any kind of impression. Still though, Georgia fell, LSU had a big win against Florida and there were plenty of other things that resonated in the minds of opinion makers across the country.

One of those would be the wide world leader in sports programming, ESPN. In its latest college football power rankings, it has moved Ohio State up to No. 2 overall, just behind what may be a surprising team. It’s not Alabama, not Clemson, but the LSU Tigers.

Here’s what senior writer Mark Schlabach says about OSU.

The Buckeyes, who were largely untested in their first six games, had the weekend off before Friday night’s game at Northwestern. The Wildcats have beaten OSU only once since 1971 — a 33-27 upset in overtime on Oct. 2, 2004, which ended a 33-game losing streak in the series. OSU defeated Northwestern 45-24 in the Big Ten championship game last season. The Buckeyes seem to be on a collision course with Wisconsin, which goes to the Horseshoe on Oct. 26.

Not much to glean from that, but we can’t argue with Ohio State being off and playing this weekend against Northwestern.

This seems to be more about who has the most impressive schedule and results by way of LSU’s victory over a couple of top ten teams, and I guess it’s hard to argue with.

Here’s the rest of the power rankings by ESPN.
