Ohio State named second greatest college football program of all-time by Sports Illustrated

We’re getting closer and closer to the season but that hasn’t stopped the lists from coming out. There’s lists for best uniforms, best teams of each decade, preseason rankings, and a whole lot more.

And now another one that’s worth noting. Sports Illustrated has come out with its greatest college football programs of all time and — as you’d expect — Ohio State is near the top. You can’t make an all-time list without having one of the blue bloods of the sport included, and SI is quick to oblige.

While the Buckeyes didn’t make the top spot overall — that went to Alabama — it came in just behind the Tide at No. 2. SI only went as far as ranking the top ten, and it’s sure to not be without controversy.

Here’s what Ross Dellinger says about the Ohio State:

“The Buckeyes only trail Michigan in all-times wins (953-911), but their two titles this century (2002, 2014) put OSU above its bitter Big Ten rival.”

The rest of the top ten includes Michigan at No. 3 (neener-neener), followed by Texas (4), USC (5), Notre Dame (6), Nebraska (7), Penn State (8), Tennessee (9), and Oklahoma (10).

It’s an okay list, but Oklahoma at No. 10 seems way out of whack. It’s hard to figure how the Sooners fell below the Texas Longhorns, but there it is. There’s no real rationale given for the measurements used here, but anytime Ohio State is mentioned at or near the top, we like to gloat.
