Ohio State Men’s Hockey sweeps Michigan to start Big Ten play

The Ohio State Buckeyes Men’s ice hockey team opened its Big Ten season with a home sweep of the Michigan Wolverines this weekend.

Ohio State entered this season with considerably less hype than last year, when the Buckeyes were preseason No. 1. After a (relatively) disappointing season that ended with a first-round loss in the NCAA tournament.

The Buckeyes entered the weekend with a 4-1-1 record and ranked No. 13 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. The Wolverines were unranked, though they did receive a vote in the poll last week.

The Buckeyes won an exciting game on Friday night, winning after trailing at the end of each of the first two periods. Ohio State eventually came through with the 3-2 come from behind victory.

The second game, on Saturday evening, was no less intense or exciting. The Buckeyes the lead midway through the second period on a goal by Michael Gildon. Michigan tied it up with under four minutes left in the game. Ohio State wouldn’t need any overtime, though, as the Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead with under two minutes left on this beauty of a game-winner.

Ohio State will face No. 4 Notre Dame (also in the Big Ten in men’s hockey) in a two-game series in South Bend next weekend.
