Ohio State men’s hockey loses to Minnesota, ending its winning streak at seven straight

All good things must come to an end, and the seven-game winning streak the Ohio State men’s hockey team was on finally hit the wall tonight against Minnesota.

The Buckeyes played well enough to win, and were even able to cut a two-goal deficit to one on three occasions, but couldn’t quite reel in that final equalizer to put the pressure on the Golden Gophers.

Ohio State didn’t light the lamp until late in the second when a pass caromed out in front for John Witala to clean it up with just a few seconds left in the period and the Buckeyes down 2-0.

The Gophers scored again early in the third period to go ahead by two yet again, but Ohio State cut the lead to one a second time with Sam McCormick’s first goal of the year.

Minnesota then got another one to go for its third two-goal lead of the game only to see Ohio State’s Quinn Preston score with an empty net with about three and a half minutes remaining in the game. From there, the Buckeyes could get no closer however as it killed off a penalty and little time to try and get another goal with the net empty.

The Buckeyes will wrap up the series with Minnesota tomorrow night at 7 PM. A win clinches the regular season title, so it should be a fun atmosphere with the potential of a celebration at the end.
