Ohio State men’s hockey knocks off Mercyhurst 7-2

The Ohio State men’s hockey team’s fast start to the 2019-2020 season continued on Friday when it knocked off Mercyhurst 7-2.

The Buckeyes got on the board first with two goals on the same power play. After a scoreless first period, senior defenseman Wyatt Ege scored on a power play with 4:30 left in the second, followed by senior forward Carson Meyer’s snipe with 3:45 to go in the period.

The scoring wouldn’t be done in the second either. Junior defenseman Grant Gabrielle put one in the back of the net just 1:32 later to give Ohio State a 3-0 lead. After the Lakers got one back before the horn sounded in the 2nd, the Buckeyes’ Wyatt Ege answered answered again with just two seconds in the period and OSU went into the break up 4-1 after two.

Mercyhurst would cut the lead in half early in the 3rd period, but then Ohio State put it out of reach with three more goals in the last stanza. Gustaf Westlund scored two and Wyatt Ege got his third of the night for the hat trick, as No. 15 Ohio State prevailed 7-2. With the win, the Buckeyes run their record to 3-1-1 on the year.

Game two against the Lakers will be played tomorrow night at 7:30 PM.
