Ohio State men’s hockey drops first of two against Michigan

All of a sudden, there are some cracks appearing in the armor of the Ohio State men’s hockey team. It was less than two weeks ago that the Buckeyes took over sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. But after a three-game losing steak, OSU now finds itself going in the wrong direction.

The latest was a brutal 3-2 loss at the hands of arch-rival Michigan in Ann Arbor Friday night. It was one that OSU gave up the lead with under four minutes in the game and couldn’t pull off an equalizer.

The Wolverines started the scoring in the 1st period when a rebound caromed out and was put back into the back of the net with 14:36 left in the period. And that’s the way the first twenty minutes would end.

The Buckeyes pulled even in the 2nd period when Caron Meyer’s attempted pass went off a Wolverines player and unexpectedly into the back of the net during a power play. Michigan got the lead back though on a 4 on 4 situation with under two minutes left in the period to head into the second break up 2-1.

Ohio State would again pull even during a power play in the 3rd period to tie it at two goals apiece when Grant Gabriele lit the lamp. However, it wouldn’t be enough because the Wolverines got the game-winning tally with just 3:43 left in the game.

The Buckeyes now desperately need a split when it has game two against Michigan Saturday night. Game time is set for 7:30 PM.
