Ohio State leads country with seven Scholar All-Americans in wrestling

For the second-straight year, the Ohio State wrestling team led the country with seven wrestlers being named Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) — the same amount of student-athletes recognized in 2017-18.

The award recipients include Micah Jordan and Joey McKenna for the third time, Ke-Shawn Hayes and Luke Pletcher for the second time, and first time honorees Malik Heinselman, Kollin Moore, and Kaleb Romero.

Ohio State finished third in the Big Ten regular season, and second in both the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments last year. But that’s not the only thing that matters.

“Honoring individuals and teams who have set themselves apart in the classroom is one of the greatest ways we can preserve and grow our sport”, Mike Moyer, NWCA Executive Director said. “Wrestling is one of the top collegiate sports having first-generation college attendees and it’s great to see so many student-athletes taking advantage of the opportunity the sport has given them by pursuing excellence in the classroom as well as on the mat.”

Congratulations to the Buckeye Wrestling team for the combination of on mat and off mat performance. It’s another example of why head coach Tom Ryan is the right man for the job.
