With the absence of sports here lately because of the COVID-19 health crisis, there have been enough lists and rankings articles circle the internet to make your head spin. But hey, we all need something to read up on correct?
Sports Illustrated is going through a series of naming each school they believe is the leader in churning out various positions. One of those such lists is the offensive line. And while we’ve seen quite a few Buckeyes go to the NFL from down in the trenches, you might be a little surprised on how many.
In fact, since 2010, Ohio State leads all schools in sending players to the NFL with 16. That’s two ahead of the second-place school Wisconsin, but that’s not enough to be named O-line U, not according to Sports Illustrated.
No, SI used a scoring method that weighted accomplishments once in the league on top of an absolute value of players drafted. You can read up on that scoring method yourself, but what’s important to note is that the Buckeyes came four spots away from being named the mythical modern-day O-Line U.
Somewhat surprisingly, Notre Dame took the prize, followed by Wisconsin (2), Florida (3), and Alabama (4). Rounding out the top ten after OSU was USC, Oklahoma, Iowa, Texas A&M, and Stanford.
At some point, it would be fun to total up all of these position groups to determine what program is the king of all positions. I don’t know what you’d call it (College Football U?), but Ohio State has to be up there since it ranks high in almost every single position group out there.
