Ohio State freshman Carnell Tate shares gratitude after tragic loss of mother

Recently, Ohio State freshman wide receiver, Carnell Tate, lost his mother unexpectedly when she was the victim of a drive-by shooting. The incident was confirmed by WGN in Chicago and multiple other outlets.

Since that fateful day on July 16, things have been relatively quiet as the Chicago Police search for the perpetrator. Police shared that witnesses claimed shots were fired into a crowd of people leaving an event. No arrests have been made as of yet as the investigation continues.

There has been a great outpouring of support for the OSU freshman, even coming from rival fans. Yesterday, Tate posted a message of thanks to everyone who has reached out with their love and support via his X, formerly known as Twitter account.

At the Big Ten media days last week, Ryan Day offered his thoughts on the tragedy.

“He and his mom were very closte,” Day said. “When you lose somebody close to you like that, it just takes the rug out from underneath you, and I know that happened to Carnell. He does have a team that’s here to support. We’ve all kind of surrounded him and tried to help them the best we can. He’s a pretty private person as well. We’ve had guys who have gone through similar situations, and you have to go through a process of grieving. We’ve talked about that. That’s not easy, but I think football has allowed him a distraction to kind of get his mind off of it when he’s not in his room or back in Chicago.”

Ashley Griggs was just 41 years old.
