Ohio State football officially announces addition of running back Trey Sermon

The Ohio State football program officially announced the addition of Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon Wednesday. The new was already known via several reports and Sermon’s announcement himself on his Twitter profile, but the move wasn’t confirmed from OSU until now.

While at Oklahoma, Sermon racked up over 2,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in three seasons. As a graduate transfer, he will be immediately eligible and should be right in the mix for the starting job this fall, or whenever the season starts. He fell behind Kennedy Brooks on the depth chart eventually before suffering an injury.

Now, he’ll get a fresh start in Columbus.

For Ohio State, getting Sermon in the backfield was a big deal. Master Teague — the presumed option to take over for J.K. Dobbins — sustained an injury in the spring, and the experience behind him is inexperienced and unknown. Teague will still be in the mix, but Sermon adds depth and talent at a position that will be a huge part of the offense.

Ohio State fans should know Sermon relatively well. He helped orchestrate an upset of J.T. Barrett and the Buckeyes in the ‘Shoe back in 2017. He rushed for 62 yards on 17 carries and caught three passes for 23 yards and a touchdown.
