Ohio State honored a record 799 Scholar-Athletes on Monday. It just seems like the university continues to get better and better when it comes to academics, and the football program is no different. Pundits like to call OSU football a win at all costs outfit, but those that do simply haven’t done the research. The academic efforts and results have been nothing short of spectacular over the last few years.
And now, we have another piece of evidence. According to a release from Ohio State Athletics, the football team had 61 players named OSU Scholar-Athletes, a new record.
In order to be named a Scholar-Athlete student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 and above for the 2020-21 academic year. Even more impressive is that the football team’s collective GPA was over that 3.00 number, at 3.05. That makes four consecutive semesters under head coach Ryan Day that the football team has had a collective GPA over 3.00.
Not bad, not bad at all. We often like to praise all of the victories and monumental moments on the field of play, but we must remember to celebrate what the program is doing in the classroom as well.
Of the football players honored, 10 have been an OSU Scholar-Athlete at least four times, including five-time honorees Tuf Borland, Gavin Cupp, and Jake Hausmann, not to mention eight true freshmen on scholarship.
