There aren’t too many college football programs out there that have the upper hand on a blue-blood like Ohio State. We’ve already looked at some of the teams the Buckeyes have never gotten the best of, and now we’re continuing that thought. We now look at teams OSU has a history with that have never beaten Ohio State.
Can you guess the teams? There are 49 total. Like the list of teams the Buckeyes have never handed a loss to, some of the matchups include a very small sample size, so take it for what it’s worth. Unlike the previous list of despair, this one is a bit longer.
So here we go as we traverse through this journey of teams that have never gotten the best of Ohio State. Credit to Winsipedia and Sports Reference for the research. We’re breaking this one down by conference since the list is longer.
Next … The American Athletic Conference
The American Athletic Conference
UCF (1-0)
Cincinnati (6-0)
Houston (1-0)
Tulane (1-0)
Tulsa (1-0)
Being an in-state opponent, obviously Ohio State has more history with Cincinnati than any other team in the American Athletic Conference. The others are just one-time affairs.
Next … Conference USA
Conference USA
Rice (2-0)
Florida Atlantic (1-0)
Marshall (2-0)
UAB (1-0)
Again, a small sample size for these schools, but not much else stands out.
Next … The Mid-American Conference
The Mid-American Conference
Akron (3-0)
Bowling Green (5-0)
Buffalo (1-0)
Eastern Michigan (1-0)
Kent State (3-0)
Miami (OH) (4-0)
Northern Illinois (2-0)
Ohio (3-0)
Toledo (3-0)
Western Michigan (1-0)
Ohio State has pretty much owned the MAC with all of these wins coming in both the past and more recent history. It’s likely, the Buckeyes will continue to play, and beat, teams from the Mid American Conference. It’s like the Big Ten lite.
Next … The Mountain West
The Mountain West
Fresno State (2-0)
Hawaii (1-0)
UNLV (1-0)
San Diego State (4-0)
San Jose State (1-0)
Wyoming (1-0)
It’s a bit surprising that San Diego State is the team Ohio State has played most here. All of these teams are a significant plane ride away, so don’t look for them to knock off the Buckeyes anytime soon.
Next … The Sun Belt
The Sun Belt
Troy (1-0)
There’s really not a whole lot of history between Ohio State and the Sun Belt, but the Buckeyes did take care of Troy in 2008.
Next … The Independents
The Independents
Army (1-0)
Navy (5-0)
Brigham Young (3-0)
New Mexico State (1-0)
Somewhat surprisingly, Navy has never knocked off the Buckeyes in five tries. I guess air superiority does count for something because Air Force has a win against Ohio State.
Next … The ACC
The ACC
Boston College (3-0)
Louisville (2-0)
North Carolina State (2-0)
Virginia (1-0)
West Virginia (2-0)
NC State took Ohio State to double-OT back in 2003 but lost a nail-biter. That’s the closest one of this group.
Next … The Big 12
The Big 12
Baylor (2-0)
Kansas State (1-0)
Oklahoma State (2-0)
Texas Tech (2-0)
Most of these Big 12 teams have improved in recent memory, but Ohio State hasn’t matched up since they were historically down. Advantage Buckeyes.
Next … The Pac-12
The Pac-12
Arizona State (2-0)
Oregon (9-0)
Oregon State (3-0)
Utah (1-0)
Washington State (8-0)
C’mon. I know you’re shocked Ohio State is 17-0 against the teams from Oregon. That’s getting it done. It’s also surprising that five teams in the Pac-12 have never tasted victory over the Buckeyes with all the history between the two conferences.
Next … The SEC
The SEC
Arkansas (1-0)
Kentucky (2-0)
Texas A&M (4-0)
Yeah, the top of the SEC has pretty much owned Ohio State, but these three teams are still searching for their first W.
Next … The Big Ten
The Big Ten
Maryland (6-0)
Rutgers (6-0)
Believe it or not, neither Rutgers or Maryland have been able to hand a loss to Ohio State since joining the Big Ten. The ‘Terps got awfully close in 2018 but lost in OT. Rutgers — not so much.
