Ohio State defensive end Chase Young named to Maxwell Award watchlist. What does it mean?

This just in — after showing up on everyone’s highlight reels from his athletic endeavors on a football field against Wisconsin this past weekend, Ohio State defensive end Chase Young has now been added to the Maxwell Award watchlist. The Maxwell Award is given to the player judged to be the best all-around in college football yearly. It’s handed out by the Maxwell Football Club which makes a lot of sense.

An interesting note about the timing; the semifinalists get announced on October 29. A quick look at the calendar tells us that we’re just one day away from that. Curious no?

Does it mean that he’ll be announced as one of the semifinalists? Why would he be put on the list to just come off of it one day later? I need to know these things.

Once the semifinalists are announced, voting then opens until November 24 to cull the list all down to typically three finalists. The winner then is unveiled on December 12.

Who knows what legitimate shot a defensive player has to win these things these days, but the Maxwell often (though not always) comes in line with the Heisman race.

We’ll have to keep an eye on this as Young continues to get more and more support for some of the major awards out there.
