Ohio State cancels face-to-face classes through summer term

Anyone that thought this fight with the COVID-19 health crisis was going to be a couple of month fight has to be coming to grips with reality at this point. Count the administrators at Ohio State in that camp.

Many professional sports leagues, businesses, and schools have been shuttered, with more and more stay-at-home orders being placed at the state level as confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus continue to balloon.

And now, the folks at OSU have suspended in-person classes all the way through the summer quarter, meaning things will be at a literal halt except for online learning. The announcement came by way of a university-wide email to students and faculty by Bruce McPheron, university executive vice president and provost.

We have made this decision in consultation with college and regional campus leadership to provide certainty for Ohio State students, faculty and staff about plans for the summer term,” said McPheron. “We cannot yet predict when current restrictions on our campuses will ease, so we are moving forward to provide a consistent academic experience for the summer term.

It’s clearly not the most important thing right now, but the move seems to provide a significant blow towards fall athletics getting ramped back up in time as well. So far there has been no comment from the athletic department — and there likely won’t be one until more is known — but we’ll keep our eyes and ears on the situation.
