Ohio State baseball takes down Florida Gulf Coast to move to 4-0 on the season

It’s been a highly successful start to the season for the Ohio State baseball team. After a three-game sweep of Seton Hall in the Snowbird Classic, it traveled down I-75 to take on Florida Gulf Coast.

And once again, superb pitching played a role in Ohio State winning, improving its record to 4-0 on the young season.

Sophomore starting pitcher Griffan Smith had command on the mound today, pitching five innings of shutout baseball. He failed to allow a base-runner until the fifth inning when two runner reached, but were left on base. He allowed just one hit.

Offensively, the Buckeyes couldn’t sustain much, but got a home run by Brady Cherry in the top of the second to get the scoring started. They then got a two-out single from Noah West in the top of the sixth, and that was it for the game.

But that’s all the OSU pitching would need. Freshman Bayden Root held the Eagles offense in check without allowing a run in three innings, then handed it over to Andrew Magno who allowed a couple of runners but was able to shut things down in the ninth.

Ohio State will now head to Corpus Christi, Texas for a four game set February 22-25.
