Ohio State baseball salvages series with Michigan State, takes game Sunday

After dropping the first two of a three-game set with Michigan State, the Ohio State baseball team was able to take the last game of the series to finish on a better note.

The Spartans got the scoring started with an RBI single in the top of the second inning, but Ohio State came right back in the bottom of the inning with a Nick Erwin RBI single to tie the score at 1-1.

Michigan State went back on top on a home run in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead, and added another run in the top of the fifth inning for a 3-1 advantage on some two-out lightning. But the Buckeyes again countered in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-RBI single by Kade Kern to tie it up a 3-3.

Brent Todys gave OSU the lead for the first time in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single, and from there the Ohio State pitching would shut down the Spartan offense. The Buckeyes would play add-on in the bottom of the eighth with some good execution on small ball to go up and roll to a 7-3 victory.

The win improves Ohio State’s record to 19-16, and now it needs to start getting wins in bunches if it has any designs of making the NCAA Tournament. Next up are some huge games against the top two teams in the league standings, Nebraska and Indiana in Bloomington next weekend.
