The Ohio State baseball team went on an unforgettable run to end the 2019 campaign, but it has now come to an end in the Nashville Regional of the NCAA Baseball Tournament.
The fact that the Buckeyes were even there, is a story we’ll remember for a long time. On the outside looking in with just a week to play in Big Ten play, OSU swept Purdue in the last regular season series just to sneak into the conference tournament.
Then, the boys decided to mess around a little bit, upset a few teams and win the whole thing to get the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament when a bid was nowhere near available without the run they went on. Ohio State looked to have to bank the odds again when placed in the same region as one of the favorites to win it all, Vanderbilt.
It was too much this time.
Ohio State dropped the first game to the Commodores, then bounced back for a win against McNeese in an elimination game, only to fall to the Indiana State Sycamores in another elimination scenario that would have sent it into a rematch with Vanderbilt with a win.
The Buckeyes fought hard, but couldn’t hold the offense of the Sycamores at bay, and couldn’t quite solve Indiana State pitching to pull off one last come-from-behind upset, falling 10-5 to fade to black on the 2019 season.
Ohio State finishes with a 36-27 overall record and now must turn the page and look ahead to what should be a promising 2020 season. But that’s for another day.
