Ohio State adds preferred walk-on JP Andrade at quarterback position

We now have at least one of the answers at the quarterback position for Ohio State, and it comes in the form of a commitment from 2019 quarterback J.P. Andrade.

After Matthew Baldwin — who was in competition with Justin Fields for the starting spot — placed his name in the transfer portal, and with Tate Martell having transferred to Miami earlier this year, the depth at the most important spot on the field was at Defcon 1.

The pecking order as it most likely stands now is Justin Fields as the clear No. 1 and the only other scholarship quarterback Chris Chugunov, the backup. The Buckeyes also have Danny Vanatsky as a walk-on in the depth chart, with Andrade likely rounding out a four-man room right now.

Andrade, a three-star quarterback out of California at 6-3, 205 lbs. was rated as the No. 57 overall pro-style quarterback from the 2019 class according to 247Sports. He’ll be considered a preferred walk-on guaranteeing him a spot on the roster this fall.

Now we’ll have to wait to see if Ohio State does anything else at the position. There’s no word on what this means for the rumors of interest between the Buckeye staff and Kentucky transfer Gunnar Hoak.
