Ohio shooting: Dramatic moment masked gunman is shot and killed by police as terrified revellers flee from scene

This is the dramatic moment police shot and killed a masked gunman after he opened fire in Dayton, killing nine people.

The CCTV surveillance video shows police confronting Connor Betts, 24, within 30 seconds of him launching his deadly rampage at a bar in the Ohio city.

Betts, who was wearing a mask, bulletproof vest, and hearing protection, had caused revellers to flee in fear as he sprayed bullets at crowds.

The footage shows the gunman chasing crowds through the entrance to Ned Peppers bar just after 1am, before police move in to shoot him dead.

Last night, Dayton Police said there would have been a “catastrophic loss of life” had they not prevented Betts from entering the Ned Peppers bar.

Betts had opened fire with a legally-purchased .223-calibre automatic rifle, killing his 22-year-old sister and eight others.

The footage was released by police as new details emerged about Betts’s troubled past in school, including an alleged "hit list" that classmates claim he kept in high school.

Two former classmates said Betts was suspended during their junior year at Bellbrook High School after the list was found scrawled in a school bathroom.

It followed an earlier suspension after Betts came to school with a list of female students he wanted to sexually assault, according to the two classmates.

The allegations were made by a man and a woman, both now 24, who spoke on condition of anonymity out of fears for their privacy.

Spencer Brickler, a former student at Bellbrook High School, also told CNN that he was told by a school counsellor he and his sister were on Betts's list.

Mr Brickler recalled the killer seeming "dark and depressive" at the time of the incident about nine years ago, CNN reports.

CNN said three more classmates of Betts allege they were told by school officials that they were on the list.

Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools Superintendent Douglas Cozad confirmed to CNN that Betts was a student, but said he left six years ago.

He added: "We are still gathering additional information and will release it as soon as we can."

It was the second mass shooting in the US in less than 24 hours. Twenty people were killed and dozens more injured when a gunman opened fire in El Paso, Texas.
