A Daytona, Ohio, man was charged this week with the 2011 murder of a 19-year-old man in Gary, Indiana, making it the seventh cold case that the FBI’s Gang Response Investigative Team has shut since the summer of 2018.

Desmon Sonny McQuay, 28, was charged in Lake County, Indiana with a litany of felonies, FBI spokesperson Chris Bavender said. He faces one count each of murder; murder while committing burglary; burglary; battery by means of a deadly weapon; and theft.

McQuay was arrested Thursday in Dayton for allegedly shooting Julian Nava in March 2018 at his home in the 4200 block of West 22nd Avenue, Bavender said.

”Julian was murdered in his own home during what we believe to be a botched daytime burglary committed by someone he knew whose intent was to steal electronic devices,” said GRIT Task Force Officer Det. Sgt. Nicholas Wardrip of the Hobart Police Department.

The accusations against McQuay mark the seventh cold case that the FBI’s GRIT investigators have deemed solved in just over a year, Bavender said, including charges filed in a 35-year-old rape case.

McQuay is being held in an Ohio jail while he awaits extradition to Indiana.
