Not everyone is going to have a great take and the Lawrence brothers kind of proved that while at San Diego Comic-Con. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matthew Lawrence showed he missed the entire point of Krypto in Superman.
When he took one of the questions out of the outlet’s bowl in their SDCC suite, it was simply a question about whether or not he’s seen Superman. The James Gunn film came out a few weeks before the convention and was the talk of the weekend. But for Matthew Lawrence, he was mad about how Clark Kent (David Corenswet) reacted to Krypto.
“This really got me,” Lawrence said. “I’m a huge animal lover. I work in conservation. I have more pets than I can count, most of them reptiles and amphibians, but I’ve had some amazing connections with dogs over the years, and that is not the relationship that I wanted to see. I think it needed more heart. It needed more depth. He was kind of like: ‘This dog. I don’t really care about this dog.’”
Andrew Lawrence did correct Matthew Lawrence in saying that Krypto is not Superman’s dog but still, even if it was, the point still stands: Everyone’s relationship with animals is different. Lawrence still doubled down and said that if you had a dog and had a “real connection” with it, that’s not what this relationship and dynamic represented. Which is hurtful seeing as it is the relationship that James Gunn has with his own dog as that’s who he modeled Krypto after.
Everyone’s relationship to their pets is different

I’ve had dogs, a pet bird, fish, and now my beloved cat, Benjamin Wyatt. And there are times with each of them where I felt like I just needed to be left alone for a moment. If you haven’t felt the frustration that Clark feels at Krypto’s destruction, you haven’t been woken up at 3 in the morning because your pet is up to something they shouldn’t be.
More than that, as it was pointed out in the video, this isn’t his dog. He doesn’t have to be lovey dovey with him because he’s just watching over Krypto. But even with that, he still has one of the most beautiful lines about Krypto in the entire movie. And again, it is relatable!
When Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) captures Krypto and takes him into another dimension, Superman needs to find him. He tells Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) that he is going to turn himself in to try and see where Lex hid the dog and when she says that ultimately, it is just a dog, Clark responds with “I know. And he’s not even a very good one. But he’s alone… and he’s probably scared.”
No matter how you feel about animals, you know that when an animal is scared it can break even the strongest of us. Whenever I hear my sweet boy cry in a situation because he’s afraid, I forget every time he’s annoyed me because I know he needs me and that’s what Clark was admitting there. Even though Krypto wrecks the Fortress of Solitude and destroys things, even though he doesn’t listen, he needs him and Clark wants to be there for him and that’s why this relationship is so important.
Sorry you missed the point though!
