For many of us the school holidays means us frantically running about planning days out but there is no need to panic as Ayrshire has some of the best beaches in the country, nay, the world to enjoy with your family.
Saltcoats was one of the most popular day trip destinations and holiday hot spots for people from all over Scotland, on Glasgow Fair Monday it was almost standing room only, particularly in the 1960s as people made their way to Saltcoats Beach Pavilion, The Prom and The Esplanade to soak up the sun, bathe in the open air pools.
In fact, since the early 19th century, Glaswegians have been going 'doon the watter for their annual holidays. Camping and B&B in places such as Rothesay and Saltcoats became traditional holidays for the working classes.
