I was hesitant to start Dexter: Resurrection. On the one hand, it had everything I should love in a Dexter show. On the other, I’d been burned before. Luckily, I was gifted with a show that really is THAT good.
Dexter: Resurrection takes place after Dexter: New Blood so spoiler alert: Dexter didn’t die. Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) wakes up from a coma to realize that he survived Harrison’s (Jack Alcott) attack on him. To be fair, Dexter did tell his son to shoot him. But it sets us up for an interesting new world for Dexter: New York City.
As a way to “protect” Harrison, Dexter moves to NYC and keeps his distance for the most part until he finally has to step in and reconnect with his son. All of that is fine and dandy except for the fact that Dexter finds himself in a situation that is basically like a buffet for him. He kills a serial killer called the “Dark Passenger,” who was targeting ride share drivers, then steals his identity to get into a dinner for “like minded individuals.”
The dinner is a safe space for serial killers. Why? Because Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage) is a billionaire obsessed with murderers. Like owns John Wayne Gacy’s clown costume and Jeffrey Dahmer’s bloody fridge level of obsessed. And it makes for a truly fascinating season in Dexter Morgan’s life. Does he support his son who needs his father or does he lean into his own dark urges and take out the killers that are all part of Harry’s code?
It’s fun when Dexter gets to be a little silly
What makes Resurrection so fun is that Dexter gets to be a bit of a fish out of water. He doesn’t know New York, he’s new to the city, and it makes some of his adventures chaotic. We’ve seen him unhinged in the past but Resurrection takes that to a new level. The way that Dexter thinks on his feet sure is something.
From being trapped in the murderers museum to trying to get another serial killer caught, Dexter is constantly up to something in Resurrection and it makes it fun to watch. Now, to be fair, I did end up binge watching the show because I finally decided I was tired of not knowing what Dexter is up to but it is kind of fun.
And yes, I do love that Parks and Recreation and American Psycho are both canon in the Dexter universe. But if you have been putting off getting to watch Dexter: Resurrection, I’d jump into it. It’s a great return for the character and hey, watching Michael C. Hall run around New York with Krysten Ritter is pretty iconic if you ask me.
