'Oh my god. This is awful': Video shows how fast moorland fire spread - and how close it got to Uppermill

This is the shocking moment flames took hold of the moors above Uppermill.

Video footage shows the land covered in orange flames, which appear to be dangerously close to nearby houses.

The clip was filmed on High Street, in the centre of the Oldham village, last night at around 7.45pm.

Firefighters worked overnight to bring the flames under control.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said five fire engines now remain at the scene.

Fire crews managed to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby properties.

The team remain at the scene battling 200m flames and are dampening down hot spots.

Greg Cookson, 51, filmed the clip as he travelled home last night and it has since received nearly 3,000 comments from shocked viewers.

He told the M.E.N: "It is awful. I was driving down the hill and could see this one that was near my house.

"It hadn't been going for long, but you could see it moving across the hill.

"I was quite a way away, I was very concerned it was going towards the houses at this point. I was quite worried. You can still smell the smoke."

Greg, who is a youth worker for Saddleworth Environmental Education charity, said: "It is a common occurence. Also we have got all of the wildlife.

"I did some work with people during the fire in Dovestones. You could see sheep and lambs running down the hill. It is devastating what it can cause."
