Oh look people are being weird about Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘SNL’ performance

Sabrina Carpenter is constantly the talk of the town, for better or worse. Whether it is people woefully misunderstanding her album artwork or criticizing her more sexual lyrics, she’s always under a microscope. And Saturday Night Live is no different.

Carpenter’s performance had her dancing around in her “room” on stage, singing “Manchild.” If you have ever just danced around without a care in the world, you know that this is a somewhat universal experience. And yet many pushed back at it. Not because they didn’t like what she was singing but because they were judging how she presented herself on stage.

Which is, often, the issue with people talking about Sabrina Carpenter online. The pop singer has faced backlash time and time from fans online who think she should act one way or another. With her Saturday Night Live performance, it was probably the tamest of her shows and yet it still is being criticized. Why?

Frankly, I think part of the issue is that she is unapologetically herself. Meaning she is, at times, overly sexual but that’s okay. She’s a 26 year old adult woman. She can be open about her sexuality and her desires.

One user on X responded to a video of the performance and wrote “Dirty music industry will make anyone desperate enough to get famous perform in panties or less How far will Sabrina go to get the level of fame she wants and desires is the real question.” There is nothing fundamentally “dirty” about this performance.

In fact, I found it to be the most relatable performance on Saturday Night Live in recent years. Dancing around in a t-shirt and your underwear is, in my opinion, a key part of “girlhood.” We all do it and we all love dancing around to whatever song is playing.

Using that as the backdrop for “Manchild” was smart but people who want to somehow criticize Carpenter for her more sexual songs is boring. Sorry that you don’t get it but that’s not all of our problems. That’s just a you problem.
