Oh Hyeon-gyu seals Celtic transfer as Ange Postecoglou makes 'really wanted' confession over deal

Celtic have secured the signing of South Korean forward Oh Hyeon-gyu from Suwon Samsung Bluewings.

It was revealed this week that the Hoops had agreed a £2.5m fee with the Korean outfit for the 21-year-old after their pursuit of World Cup star Cho Gue-sung never materialised in to a move. Hyeon-gyu, however, becomes the champions' fourth recruit of the January window joining defenders Alistair Johnston and Yuki Kobayashi, alongside utility star Tomoki Iwata.

The forward looks set to bolster attacking options for Ange Postecoglou with the potential exit of Giorgos Giakoumakis this month after his contract talks stalled in Glasgow. The Greek hitman has reported interest from Japan and the USA with a big decision to be made on his next step with the transfer window entering the final week of trading. Reacting to his latest signing, the Hoops boss told Celtic's official website: “We are delighted to bring Oh to Celtic.

“He is a young, talented striker with great attributes and someone who is ready to take the next stage in his career – a player who is hungry, eager to develop and to achieve success.

“I have watched Oh for some time and he is the striker I really wanted as I think he will be a great fit in our squad.

“Really importantly, I know that he had his heart set on joining us too and that his own perseverance has been crucial in making this deal happen, so his determination to join Celtic has been very clear.

“We are really pleased to welcome him to the club and look forward to working with him and settling him into our squad.”

A club statement read: "Celtic Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of South Korean internationalist, Hyeongyu Oh, who has joined the club on a five-year deal, subject to international clearance.

"The 21-year-old forward joins from K League 1 club, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, where he has played since 2019."
