'Oh, here we go!' Russell Martin's brilliant response to Preston train journey after being joined by Swansea City fans

Swansea City's opening month under Russell Martin ended in fairly grim fashion.

The Swans lost 3-1 to Preston North End at Deepdale, despite going ahead through Joel Piroe's fourth goal for the club.

It meant Swansea have four points to their name from their opening five Championship matches of the campaign, although they are into the third round of the Carabao Cup having defeated Reading and Plymouth Argyle.

Following last Saturday's loss to Preston, fans were left shocked as they were joined by head coach Martin on the train home from Lancashire to south Wales.

And the 35-year-old has revealed he was in the process of moving his family to Swansea as the rest of the squad and staff travelled back to Wales separately.

"I'd rather it [train journey] after a win," he said.

"I had to go home because I brought my family back to Wales.

"They've all moved which is brilliant and it's nice to have them here. It means I can really focus on the work. The kids start school next week so it's really exciting.

"The supporters were great. I saw loads of them getting on the train and I thought 'Oh no, I could be in for a bit of stick here'.

"I was sitting down on the end of the train and all of a sudden heard the chants and I thought 'Oh, here we go', but they were brilliant.

"The support we've had since we came in has been incredible.

"They get it, they understand it's a process and they've seen already that the team has some sense of identity and a way of doing things.

"I was actually watching the game back so it was a welcome break from watching it. I only enjoyed the first 20 minutes, after that I didn't enjoy too much.

"They were brilliant, really positive and really supportive. The fans at every football club are the most important people. They were here long before me and they'll be here long after me, the same as any player.

"Once you support a team, that's it, that's your tribe and you'll be with them forever, especially here where it's such an important part of the community."

Swansea return to action against Hull City on Saturday, September 11, before taking on Millwall on home soil four days later.
