Ofsted explains why some schools haven't been inspected since the last Labour government

Last week the ECHO listed the 11 primary schools in Wirral that had been deemed outstanding by school inspectors Ofsted.

But many readers raised questions over the amount of time between inspections.

A school that is given an 'outstanding' rating is exempt from routine inspections, but some had not been visited since the last Labour government in 2008.

Shocked by the amount of time that has passed, with over a decade of advancement in technology, curriculum and not to mention education policy, readers wanted to know when some of the schools would be revisited.

We put this question to Ofsted who said a recent law change was about to spark a wave of new inspections, with particular attention on those outstanding schools who have not been visited for a long time.

A spokesperson for Ofsted told the ECHO: "Outstanding schools were formerly exempt from routine inspection, which meant that we were only able to inspect them if we had serious concerns, rather than routinely as part of our inspection schedule.

"The law on this has recently changed.

"Since we resumed inspecting schools in September this year, we are now visiting outstanding schools – prioritising those where we have concerns, or that haven’t been inspected for a long time.

"We think this will reassure parents and make sure that the outstanding judgement itself remains a genuine beacon of excellence."

Outstanding is the highest rating a school can get and it can only achieve it overall without any grades of 3 - requires improvement - and 4 - inadequate.

Around 10% of primary schools inspected by Ofsted are considered 'outstanding' - the majority are graded with a 2 - 'good'.
