Officials search for family of man killed in Hammond hit-and-run

Feb. 18--Authorities are asking for help in finding relatives of a man who was killed in a hit-and-run in Hammond about two weeks ago.

Stephen Thompson, 58, of Hammond, was walking in traffic on 169th Street about 8:43 p.m. Feb. 7 when he was struck by a dark blue or black pickup truck traveling west, according to Hammond police and the Lake County coroner's office.

The truck driver fled northbound on Calumet Avenue.

Police said the pickup may be a Ford or Chevrolet/GMC with front end damage and "4x4" decals on the sides of the truck toward the rear.

Officials have not been successful in finding Thompson's family, according to a statement from the coroner's office.

Thompson was a white man who had a tattoo on his upper right arm of a steer skull with feathers hanging from the left antler. He was wearing blue jeans, Pittsburgh Steelers T-shirt, black boots and a blue outer jacket at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information about Thompson or his relatives should contact the coroner's office at 219-755-3265.

Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to contact Hammond police at 219-853-6490 or Hit Run at 219-852-2940 for Sgt. Tracy Laurinec or Lt. Pat Vicari. Callers may remain anonymous.
