Officials: Man thought he was wanted on warrant, drove 107 mph to elude cop

Jan. 08--A Burbank man who mistakenly thought there was a warrant out for his arrest drove more than 100 mph to elude police after a traffic stop in Riverside, authorities said.

Julian E. Martinez, 21, of the 7500 block of South Lockwood Avenue, was charged with felony aggravated fleeing and eluding, failure to signal, improper lane usage and speeding at 107 mph in a 50-mph zone, according to a news release from the Riverside Police Department.

Police said the incident began at 2:05 a.m. Wednesday when an officer saw a driver who appeared to be vomiting and tossing something out the window of his vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet SUV.

The officer stopped the vehicle at First and Parkview avenues, but when he walked toward it, Martinez suddenly drove south on First toward Ogden Avenue, according to the release.

Martinez continued south to Illinois Highway 171 and then onto Interstate 55. The officer did not pursue the vehicle after it reached speeds of 107 mph, police said.

The officer put out an emergency broadcast, and an hour later, Burr Ridge police saw the vehicle near I-55 and Illinois Highway 83. The vehicle went off the road, into a grassy ravine. The driver tried to run away but was caught by Burr Ridge and DuPage County sheriff's police, according to the news release.

Martinez and passengers in his car were turned over to Riverside police. Once in custody, Martinez said he thought there was a warrant for his arrest, but there were no active warrants for him, police said.

The passengers were not charged.
