CHICAGO _ A man shot himself to death after allegedly shooting his daughter in the face during an incident Wednesday evening at Elmhurst Hospital west of Chicago, according to a hospital spokesman.
It happened about 7:11 p.m. when hospital officials were notified that a man shot his daughter in the parking lot of the hospital, said Edward Elmhurst Health spokesman Keith Hartenberger.
"The father apparently, allegedly shot the daughter in the face, and then somehow she made it into the ER, and he shot himself and, apparently, killed himself," Hartenberger said.
The daughter was being treated there, but her age and condition were not immediately available.
The hospital briefly went on lockdown, Hartenberger said, but no one else was injured, and as of 7:45 p.m. CDT, hospital operations were getting back to normal.
For a brief time, emergency room patients were not allowed in or out.
The situation was "not an active shooter," Hartenberger said, though early reports from fire department officials came in that way.
"No other injuries have happened, and nobody at the hospital is in danger," he added.
Hartenberger did not know why the two had been in the parking lot, which is outside the hospital.
The identity of the deceased man was not being made available immediately.
A police spokesman could only say: "There was an incident at the hospital."
A spokesman with the Bellwood Fire Department said the department learned of a "possible active shooter," after one of its ambulances was stuck at the hospital.
No further details were immediately available.
